John Van Doorn and Maatje Broodman were married on August 21, 1841 in Bruinisse, The Netherlands. He was a bricklayer. She was the daughter of Adriaan and Adriaantje Broodman, a farmer near Bruinisse. John and Martha made their home in Nieuwerkerk.
John and Martha immigrated to the United States in 1847.
They lived at 44 Tappan Street in Rochester, NY. In 1860 he estimated his home was valued at $600 with personal property of $150. In 1870, the home was valued at $1200 with $100 of personal property. By 1875, his home was valued at $3,000.
John served as the Sunday School Superintendent at the First Reformed Church of Rochester. He earned a living as a brick and stone mason his entire life.
John’s first wife, Maatje, died August 27, 1871. He married Leuntje (Lena) Proul Kreiger on May 15, 1872. She died on March 10, 1888. He married his third wife, Janneka Lusink De Neve, on July 21, 1892. John died on October 22, 1897 of “chronic nephritis.”
Upon his death in 1897, John left a third of his estate to his third wife Janneka, his son Marinus, and his daughter Jane. Special mention was made in his will of grand daughter Maude Buik who received his pump organ and his grand son John Van Doorn who received his watch and “gold pen with holder”. Marinus was the sole executor of the estate.
John, Martha, and Lena are all buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.
John’s daughter, Adrianje (Jane), married Herman Pick and had at least one son, Jan, and one daughter, Maud.
John’s son, Marinus, married Cornelia Van Petegem on September 12, 1866. She was born November 20, 1845 and died February 16, 1931. Initially he made his living as a co-owner of a dry goods store, Cappon & Van Doorn, in Rochester. Later, Marinus graduated from New Brunswick Seminary in 1880 and went on to serve Reformed Church pastorates at Clymer (1881-89), Newark (1889-93), and Pultneyville (1893 - 1905).
Marinus died on October 17, 1910. Marinus and Cornelia are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.
Marinus and Cornelia had a total of nine children; seven sons and two daughters.
Magdalena was born Mar 28, 1873 and died of “maramus” as a child on October 5, 1875 at the age of two years and six months. She is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.
John was a physician practicing in Marion, New York. He had one son, F. Morgan Van Doorn. Morgan, in turn, had a son by the same name, who goes by the nickname Skip, and a daughter, Sandra. F. Morgan Van Doorn died May 4, 1966 and John, his father, died on Jan. 13, 1945.
James was born June 10, 1869 and died Oct. 5, 1943. He had one son, Walter, who died in Madeira Beach, Florida on Dec. 14, 1957 without children.
Jennie was born June 13, 1881 and died on March 28, 1943 in Rochester, New York at the age of 61 years, 9 months, and 16 days, and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. She never married.
Martin, a furniture salesman, died on July 12, 1955 at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 15 days. Henry died on February 9, 1948. Clarence died on October 11, 1956 at the age of 66 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
Martin was a bachelor. Martin and Clarence died in Rochester and are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Edward died in Rochester on Nov. 28, 1947, leaving one son, Paul. Paul did not have any sons.
Walter was born Jan 7, 1887 and died on March 29, 1892 at the age of five years and three months in Newark, New Jersey. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York.
