Jurjen Holtman was born in Midwolda, The Netherlands to Luppo Jujen Holtman and Wendeltje Wierts ten Have. Lamberdina Groenboom was born in Loppersum, The Netherlands to Jakob Hindriks Groenboom and Triintje Derks Knol. Jurjen and Lamberdina were married on May 5, 1877 in Loppersum.
The Holtmans emigrated from the province of Groningen in The Netherlands in 1889. Jurrien became a US citizen in 1890. He made a living as a carpenter. Jurrien and Lamberdena had a total of ten children. Only five lived to adulthood. Their oldest daughter Katherine married William Van Doorn.
The Holtman family resided at 219 Sherman Street in the early years. In 1920 they were living at 1008 Wealthy Street. In their latter years, they lived at 862 Baxter Street. The family attended Third Reformed Church of Grand Rapids. As adults, several of the children attended Bethany Reformed Church.
Neither Jurrien nor Lamberdina Holtman ever learned to speak English. According to Phyllis (Van Doorn) Dood, Lamberdina “hated the US” and therefore refused to learn the language.
